When I was in ninth or tenth grade my high school had to add a language class in order to receive some kind of state accreditation. We had two teachers that were certified to teach either Spanish or French, but the budget and requirements only called for one language to be taught. Since our town had a regular and growing migrant population of Spanish speakers and seeing that speaking Spanish would benefit all of us no matter where we traveled in the United States, it was decided that French would be the optimal choice. I have a couple friends from Europe and I'm always embarrassed about being mono-lingual when I talk with them. It seems all of them know three or four languages and speak better English than I do. What's the deal with that? Why is it such a problem for Americans to want to learn a second language? When did it become an attack on our national sovereignty to be able to communicate with people from different countries?
I have no problem with English being the 'official' language of the United States, but I wouldn't mind knowing a couple more.
