I was a little put out that no one at the house remembered my birthday last week until they saw you guys posting about it online. That’s why I love all of you more.
What? Not remembering Dad’s birthday! That’s criminal! Last night I threw a surprise birthday party for my husband. I cleaned the house all morning long and then told him I was going to drop off some recycling, when in actually I was on an ice-buying mission. The clerk asking me if I was having a “Par-tay” and when I told him it was a surprise he asked if Jeff had any clue at all. I said “No. I think his natural obliviousness is working in my favor.” (He laughed) And it did. Jeff was very confused and surprised.
I always worried about surprise parties. There was always that seed of doubt in the back of my mind of it going horribly wrong. Like the guest of honor having a heart attack or shooting a guest.
I did mine differently. I invited people and shopped in secret. My husband was playing video games when the doorbell rang. Guests walked in and said “Um…surprise! Happy Birthday!”
